The Reading Rota - found in the ruins of the abbey in my home town - is one of the oldest pieces of written music. It consists of a four-part canon, with an accompanying two-part canon, the manner of performance being written out in detail (this performance is more extended). There are religious words provided as well as the secular ones, and it is not clear which came first. Performed by The Cherwell Singers, in The Holywell Music Room, Oxford (itself possibly the oldest purpose-built music room). in July 2007, and recorded with the Core Sound TetraMic.
